We are a charity working in Halifax Town Centre Friday and Saturday evenings to meet the needs of those who have become vulnerable on a night out.
We work to meet the needs of those who have been spiked, are victims of crime or those who have had too much to drink and as a consequence is in need of support.
We are in our 13th year of working to make Halifax a safe place to be. Every year we provide around 13,000 volunteer hours and help approximately 3,000 people.
In addition to our work in the town centre, we also have a community café and Christian bookshop (Angels Rest Café, 15 Crossley Street, Halifax). We work in schools, colleges and youth groups to deliver our #SafeNightOut workshops aimed at educating young people about alcohol, drugs and crime awareness and we provide stewards for local community events.

What we do
Accidents happen on nights out, whether it’s stepping on a broken bottle or having too much to drink. All Street Angels volunteers are trained in basic first aid. We also provide suspended coffees through our Angels Rest Cafe as well as anything else we can do.

We’re here if you need a chat, advice, help getting a taxi or a shoulder to lean on. All our volunteers are friendly and happy to help. Everyone who patrols for us is background checked for your piece of mind.
|
We’re here to help for practical matters. We have thousands of pairs of disposable flip-flops, for when walking in your heels is just too painful. We’re also equipped with portable mobile phone chargers in case you’ve run out of battery and need to make a call urgently.
|
All our Street Angels have one thing in common – we love helping people. You can always be assured of a friendly smile and a sympathetic ear if you bump into one of our volunteers on a night out. We aim to put the words of Christ into action, to love one another without judgement.

A brief history of the Halifax Street Angels
|
Halifax Street Angels were launched in November 2005 as a response to needs in the Halifax Town Centre. Halifax had a reputation – binge drinking, violence, coach parties from across the North of England, sexual assaults, under-age drinkers in the pubs and clubs. Halifax had almost become a no-go place for many people on Friday and Saturday nights.
Friday 25th November 2005, we opened the cafe not knowing what to expect! Fifty volunteers turned up on the first night far too many to fit into our small cafe – so the concept of Halifax Street Angels was born! People were volunteering their time, out on the streets in all weathers until early hours of the morning, supporting and caring for others. |
In our six week trial, we helped and assisted 69 people – from seniors leaving the theatre to young people who had had too much to drink to people wanting to wait in Fairtrade Cafe for taxis as it was safer than waiting in a taxi queue. Halifax’ Street Angels worked! Twelve months later violent crime in the town centre, which typically increased on Friday and Saturday nights, had reduced by 42%.
Halifax Street Angels continued beyond the trial – on the streets we saw lives changed, people helped at a time when it was most needed, and our town begin to change. Through a partnership with St John Ambulance, one man had his life saved through the rapid response of the first aid team – volunteers investing time and skills on our streets worked!

"The witness of Christians through work in night-time projects brings Jesus' own ministry of welcome to our streets and I am immensely grateful for the difference you make to the lives of vulnerable people. My prayers are with you.”
- Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury
